Dan & Maria are an incredibly fun and happy couple – they met at school when they were 16 and have been together through Universities and qualifying (a scientist and a doctor!). As Maria said in her speech – most couples have ups and downs throughout their relationship but theirs had been a magical time of ups – and it shows in their obvious love and sense of fun with each other.
A sunny Chaucer Barn wedding has to be at the top of my “best venues to shoot at” list – it’s a stunning Norfolk wedding venue! Every time I’ve photographed there the weather’s been beautiful and a Chaucer Barn golden hour is something to be seen and admired! Maria & Dan had booked with me back in 2017 so it was so exciting when their wedding day arrived perfectly timed on one of the hottest days of the year.
As Dan & Maria said: “We completely fell in love with the beautiful Barn and in particular the stunning grounds. We knew we wanted a fun relaxed day outside, and Chaucer Barn has the perfect feel. We also loved that we could hire it for the whole weekend to prolong the celebrations with family and friends”
The advantage with Chaucer Barn is that the wedding party can all get ready in one building. The boys in the rooms in one “wing” of the house and the girls in another! Maria & her bridesmaids (Dan’s sister and soon to be sister in law) got ready in the lounge overlooking the lawn. Because the weather was so lovely that’s where the ceremony was being held. Zoe from Girly Glam did a beautiful job with the girls’ hair and make up as always. The girls had a great view of the arriving guests, whilst the guests couldn’t see them up in the first floor lounge!
There’s lots of options for ceremonies at Chaucer Bar! Inside the house if it’s horrible weather, on the lawn, down in the woodland clearing or set up your own marquee or tipi tent in the grounds. Absolutely spoilt for choice! Maria & Dan chose to have their ceremony on the lawn, with a celebrant friend conducting it. The parents were nicely involved in the ceremony as Dan & Maria chose to light a candle with each of their parents to remember lost ones. They followed up by having the “legal” ceremony in the upstairs lounge followed by a wonderful confetti walk afterwards. So many fabulous colours with the fresh flower petal confetti!
The Afternoon Reception
It was an incredibly hot day so the guests alternated between finding shade and playing the lawn games in the sunshine. Dan & Maria have a brilliant set of friends who were also celebrating being newly qualified doctors, so there was much laughter & fun with them all over the course of the day!
There were plenty of cooling drinks on hand to keep everyone hydrated and we rattled through the family photos quickly so no-one was standing around too long. Dan and his family have been well trained when it comes to smiling for photos – their mum is a keen family photographer and has captured them all beautifully over their years of growing up!
Maria & Dan had thoughtfully provided a basket full of sunglasses, suncrean, hand windup fans and antihistimes for their guests – a really nice touch for a sunny day! They chose a marquee for their wedding reception and had decorated it with hand made bunting, hearts and stunning pale blue & cream flowers. Dan’s mum had made the flower arrangements and bouquets – a real talented lady – they were beautiful!
Dan & Maria are a laid-back couple, so they knew that they didn’t want the day to be too formal. Once they had selected Chaucer Barn and knew they had that relaxed rustic wedding feel, the rest of the details all fell into place around that.
Once the guests had enjoyed their main course the speeches kicked off with Maria’s dad, followed by Dan himself, (who had a “hayfever” moment with teary eyes!) followed by Maria (wives speeches – I heartily agree with these!) and finally with Dan’s brothers, which all went down a storm.
Pudding and coffee followed and by this point the sun had slipped a little lower, so it was more comfortable to get out on the lawn and play some games! We had a stunning golden hour across the fields at Chaucer and took full advantage of that to get some beautiful couple portraits, though poor Dan was suffering with the high pollen levels.
Back into the marquee for the cake cutting – Colin Caterpillar, and Connie Caterpillar and lots of little caterpillar cakes from M&S – a really sweet and tasty idea. Maria had a bit of a struggle but managed to cut the head off her lady caterpillar eventually 😉 We then went over to the lawn where Maria threw her bouquet – twice! The first one to grab the bouquet was Dan’s soon to be sister in law, so it was re-thrown, to the delight of a gentleman at the back who leapt very high to ensure he caught it!
Finally, it was into the house where the disco had been set up for the couple’s first dance. The dance floor filled up very quickly with the DJ playing some great music, and my second shooter and I reluctantly left after catching some great moves on our cameras!
Advice from the wedding couple
“It can be too easy to get swept away with trying to keep everyone happy – do what you want to do, it’s your day after all!”
What an awesome day it was, from start to finish, with the smiliest of couples and their families on an amazing summer’s day. I consider myself so very lucky to work with such lovely people in such beautiful surroundings. THANK YOU, Mr & Mrs De Lucchi for choosing me as your wedding day photographer XX
